Deschamps: Man Utd striker Rooney as dangerous as ever

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Olympique Marseille coach Didier Deschamps doesn't believe claimsManchester United strikerWayne Rooney is off form.
Marseille face United in the Champions League.
Deschamps told The Sun: "Rooney's form is already much better. He had a difficult world cup but he's coming back. Berbatov is the big threat because of his goals.
"Only one will play of course but Rooney can play on the wing. Even if Rooney hasn't scored a lot this season he's still given so many assists for goals.
"Berbatov is very efficient, even if last season for him was not the best. But they are gifted players that's why United are top of the league."

Man Utd boss Ferguson: I would be proud to call Giggs my son

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson says he would be proud to callRyan Giggs his son!
Giggs penned a new deal with United last week.
Ferguson said: “Ryan always had the potential to be a special player and was richly endowed with speed, balance, touch and a courage that, whether he was dribbling with the ball or sprinting past opponents to receive it in areas of maximum threat, he could leave the best defenders with twisted blood.
“He’s had a brilliant career, he’s still making an outstanding contribution and still has an influence on the young players in the dressing room.
“He’s a fine man who has been a credit to his family and this club and is someone you’d be proud to call your own son.”

Man Utd boss Ferguson: FA Cup has big role in English football future

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson insists the FA Cup has a big role to play in English football.
United, who have won the trophy five times under Ferguson, were accused of undermining it by their decision not to take part in 2000. Instead, they went to the inaugural FIFA World Club Cup Championship in Brazil, having won the Champions League in 1999.
Ferguson claimed United had a gun held to their head by the FA to go to Brazil after pressure from FIFA, but later admitted it was the wrong move. And he still believes the FA Cup has a special place in the English game.
He said: “It’s a fine tournament though maybe it could do with smartening up along with a bit of tweaking to fit into the modern football calendar.
“The FA are considering various measures to revitalise a competition we may have been taking for granted. I wouldn’t like to see replays being abandoned in favour of penalty shootouts, though.
“Think about Burton Albion and the money they were able to make from their replay with us at Old Trafford a few years ago.
“But I do think it may be a good idea to seed the Premier League teams in the early stages to help protect the quality of the tournament.”

Man Utd defender Ferdinand still struggling with injury

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United defenderRio Ferdinand continues to struggle with injury.
The Mirror says Ferdinand will not travel with Manchester United toMarseille today and is a big doubt for Saturday's Premier League trip to Wigan.
England captain Ferdinand has been sidelined since suffering a calf injury during the warm-up before United's 2-1 defeat at Wolves on February 5.
It was hoped Ferdinand would be fit to face Wigan, but United do not want to rush him back, with huge back-to-back Premier League trips away to Chelsea and Liverpoollooming.
Although Ferdinand has resumed light training, he has yet to join in with the first-team squad and is unlikely to do so until the back end of the week.

Real Madrid boss Mourinho rivals Man Utd for Everton prospect Rodwell

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Real Madrid are ready to compete withManchester United forEverton midfielder Jack Rodwell.
The Daily Mail says Jose Mourinhohas instructed Real Madrid spies to compile a dossier on Everton starlet Rodwell.
Manchester United are preparing a £15million bid for the versatile 19-year-old, while Manchester City have also been linked with a move for Rodwell.
But the Manchester clubs are set to be joined by Real in the race after Mourinho’s intervention.
The Spanish giants have kept an eye on Rodwell since he impressed in England’s run to the European Under 21 Championships final in 2009.
Mourinho is poised to reignite the Bernabeu club’s interest after asking Madrid scouts to update him on Rodwell’s progress.
The Portuguese manager’s request underlines Rodwell’s growing reputation as one of the brightest talents in Europe.

Man Utd lose Anderson for two months

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United have lost Anderson for two months with a torn hamstring.
The Daily Mail says the Brazilian pulled up with the injury early in the first half of United’s FA Cup victory over Crawley on Saturday.
He had ice treatment on the side of the pitch but was replaced at half-time by Wayne Rooney.
Scans showed worse damage than expected on Monday and he has been advised to rest for up to eight weeks.

Pandiani continues feud with Real Madrid star Ronaldo: Another time you would need dentist!

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Osasuna striker Walter Pandiani has again spoken of his bust-up with Real Madridstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
Pandiani said Ronaldo had a "screw loose" and was upset with the way the former Manchester Unitedwinger had mocked his wages during their clash earlier this year.
"In my country he might have had to make an appointment with the dentist in a situation like that," blasted Pandiani last night.
"It bothers me to see someone say such things having come from a small island as poor as the one he has left.
"I was sorry to see him behave like that and that's why I said what I said. Maybe in my country I would have acted differently, but as I love football I reacted with words.
"In my country, he might have had to make an appointment with the dentist in a situation like that."

Man Utd midfielder Carrick: Rooney derby winner had us all jumping

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Michael Carrick saysWayne Rooney lifted everyone atManchester United with his wonder goal in the derby.
As a top-level professional, performing an overhead kick should be nothing special to Carrick. However, even he was staggered by the manner Rooney took his chance.
"I felt shock and surprise because it was completely out of the blue," said the 29-year-old. "But at the same time there was pure elation. I was standing on the touchline about to come on and thought of doing a (Jose) Mourinho down the line.
"Straight away you knew you'd witnessed something special."

Spurs need top four finish to keep £35M Modric away from Man Utd

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson is determined to testTottenham's resolve overLuka Modric.
The Croatia international has been in dazzling form for Spurs at home and in Europe this season.
The News of the World says Ferguson sees Modric as the ideal successor for Paul Scholes, who is still to pen a new contract for next season.
Ferguson is willing to go to £35 million for Modric in the summer.
Success for United may depend on whether Spurs clinch a top four finish this season.

Wigan skipper Caldwell ready for showdown with Man Utd ace Rooney

22.02.11 | tribalfootball.com

Wigan Athletic captain Gary Caldwell is ready for his showdown withManchester United aceWayne Rooney this weekend.
The England star scored one of the goals of season, arguably the decade, in last week’s win overManchester City, with many predicting it will put an end to Rooney’s relatively poor run of form.
“We have to prepare as normally as possible ahead of the United game,” Caldwell told the Wigan Evening Post.
“The manager will show us what United are good at, and give us options on how to deal with those things and what we’re going to do as individuals and as a team.
“I think we’ve shown enough this season that anyone coming to the DW won’t fancy it, and hopefully we can produce a good display, get the fans behind us and get a big win.”
On the goal that everybody’s been talking about, Caldwell added: “It was an absolutely fantastic strike.
“The agility and the contact he managed to get on the ball was breathtaking. But they have talented players all over the park, and we’re going to need to deal with them all.
“Whether Rooney can score goals like that every week is another matter – but he’s clearly a real threat when he is on form like that.”

Rooney: Goal was payback

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has dedicated his stunning derby winner to the supporters.

The England frontman scored a magnificent overhead kick to clinch a 2-1 victory over neighbours Manchester City at Old Trafford and then told the fans: "I owe you that".
There is no superlative that can do justice to the manner with which Rooney spun round, manipulated his body four feet into the air, then connected with Nani's cross with such power Joe Hart didn't move before it flashed into the top corner of his goal.
It will be replayed many years from now and will be a major contender for the goal of the season prize.
However, given Rooney's indifferent form since he suffered the first of a succession of ankle injuries in Munich last March, the 25-year-old accepts there was an element of payback as well.
"The Manchester United fans deserve that from me," said Rooney, whose goal secured a 2-1 win.
"I haven't had the best of seasons and I know how big this game is in Manchester, so I hope they enjoyed that.
"Now the aim is to keep scoring and help us get that title back."
TOO EXPERIENCED
In that regard, Rooney was somewhat more forceful than Sir Alex Ferguson.
Unlike his manager, who has spent the last few months emphasising just how crazy this season has been and is presumably far too experienced to take anything for granted, Rooney was prepared to look at United's imposing eight-point lead over their neighbours, check they also have a match in hand in a season which, for them, has 12 hurdles left, and discount them from the battle.
"It almost certainly rules City out of the title race unless a disaster happens," he said.
"We are the team to catch. We know how it feels to be top of the league and to get over that finish line.
"We have the experience with the manager and the players and we know what we have to do.
"Hopefully within the next six or seven games, we can maintain that gap, or make it bigger."

Berbatov: Rooney is the best

Dimitar Berbatov believes Manchester United strike colleague Wayne Rooney is the best in the business.

The Bulgarian may be the Barclays Premier League's top marksman, but he is full of admiration for the England international.
Berbatov has already plundered 19 goals this season, taking him to the top of the scoring charts.
He was, however, dropped to the bench by Sir Alex Ferguson on Saturday as the Red Devils claimed a 2-1 derby victory over Manchester City.
Rooney, who grabbed a spectacular winner, was given the nod instead, with Ferguson favouring his work rate over Berbatov's creative talents.
BEST FORWARD
The Bulgarian international though has no problem with the rotation policy at Old Trafford, as he believes Rooney is the most complete frontman in England.
"When you consider all the attributes forwards need, Wayne is number one in my opinion," said Berbatov.
"He's the best forward I've ever played with.
"But everything's going well for me this season and if we can win the title it will be even better.
"That's my main wish. If, in May, we've won the title and I'm there to lift it, then it would be a personal best for me.
"I'd love to do that for the manager, who's been here almost 25 years, as well as my team-mates and the fans.
"My ambitions have always been high, so I'll try and score another 20 by the end of the season."

Scholes excited about run-in

Paul Scholes views the Champions League resumption as the beginning of the end for Manchester United this season.

Although United are not in action this week, the resumption of hostilities across Europe marks the emergence from the depths of winter.
And for Scholes, it is also the start of a run-in to what he hopes will be a glorious end to the season.
"It's the sign for the run-in," said the veteran midfielder. "It just kind of happens without you knowing it. You know there are 12 games left in the league, the FA Cup is getting down to the latter stages and Europe is starting again.
"Every game becomes more important. It is the time to stand up and start playing."
TOUGH PLACE
United could not have made a better start, securing a derby-day victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford.
That result - and Chelsea's failure to overcome Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday - have arguably turned the title race into a straight fight between United and Arsenal.
Scholes, though, only has eyes for non-league Crawley in the FA Cup, and then Didier Deschamps' Marseille, who stand between United and a place in the quarter-finals, where they lost in agonising fashion to Bayern Munich last season.
"Marseille won't be easy," he said. "It's a tough place. We played there before quite a few years ago and got beaten.
"But we are looking forward to it. Hopefully it is the start of a good end to the season for us and we can go all the way to the final again and win it."

Ferdinand pays tribute to Neville

Rio Ferdinand is the latest big-name Manchester United player to heap praise on retired team-mate Gary Neville.

The veteran right-back quit the game earlier this month and has already started working with United's academy players in an effort to complete his coaching badges before deciding what to do with the remainder of his life.
Neville's competitive nature meant he acquired the reputation of being a fearsome, formidable and sometimes forbidding character.
However, Ferdinand has seen a different side to the defender. And he accepts Neville, who has just turned 36, will be missed around Old Trafford.
REALLY FUNNY
"Gary was tremendous," said Ferdinand.
"He had great determination and drive and could deliver fantastic crosses.
"I remember the first time I joined up with an England squad, Gary would be doing his own stretches whilst the manager was talking to the players before training.
"People used to take the Mickey out of him for that. But it just shows you the length he would go to in order to maximise his potential.
"That sort of behaviour earned him a reputation as somebody who was very serious.
"But he was a really funny bloke and we will miss him in the dressing room."

Giggs pens new contract

Ryan Giggs has signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United.

The veteran Welshman had already indicated his wish to continue his career into a remarkable 21st season at Old Trafford and United have confirmed the deal has been signed.
Giggs has made 24 appearances for the Red Devils this season and his glittering career includes 11 Premier League title medals.
LUCKY ENOUGH
"All I've ever wanted to do is play for United and I've been lucky enough to do that for 20 years," said Giggs.
"It is great to know I'm still contributing to the team's success and I feel I've got a lot to offer on and off the pitch.
"This is an exciting time to be involved with so many good young players coming through."
Giggs has played more than 850 times for the Red Devils and recently featured in his 600th Premier League match. He also holds the distinction of scoring in every Premier League campaign.
"You run out of words to describe Ryan Giggs," said manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "He is a marvellous player and a wonderful man.
"To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level in such a physically demanding position at his age requires a special person.
"He is still turning in man-of-the-match performances and his experience is so vital for the younger players in the squad."

FA Cup review - Sat 19th Feb

FA Cup review - Sun 20th Feb A review of Barclays Premier League sides in FA Cup fourth and fifth round action.

In the day's early kick-off, holders Chelsea were knocked out of the competition after losing their fourth-round replay against Everton on penalties.
After a goalless 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard gave the holders the lead in the first-half of extra-time before Leighton Baines curled home a superb 25-yard free-kick in the last minute to take the match to a shootout.
Baines then saw his spot-kick - Everton's first - saved by Petr Cech, but Nicolas Anelka's effort was superbly saved by Tim Howard before Ashley Cole fired Chelsea's fifth penalty over the bar to allow Phil Neville to seal a 4-3 shootout win.
Everton will now face Reading at Goodison Park in their fifth-round match on Tuesday 1st March.
COMFORTABLE VICTORY
In Saturday's fifth round matches, Birmingham City and Stoke City successfully navigated their way past lower league opposition, with each team enjoying a 3-0 win.
Birmingham cruised into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the second successive season after their win over Sheffield Wednesday  - but Alexander Hleb could be facing Wembley heartbreak.
Hleb set up the first two goals for Jean Beausejour and Obafemi Martins but was then stretchered off and looks doubtful for next weekend's Carling Cup final with his former club Arsenal.
Full-back David Murphy scored the third goal early in the second period and Birmingham were comfortable winners despite making eight changes.
Meanwhile, Stoke sealed their place in the sixth round with a comfortable victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at the Britannia Stadium.
The visitors were undone by three first-half headers, with John Carew netting after 14 minutes and his strike partner Jon Walters making it 2-0 eight minutes later.
Walters then set up Potters captain Ryan Shawcross just before the interval, and although Brighton improved in the second period, they were unable to reduce the deficit.
Finally, Richard Brodie hit the bar in stoppage time as non-league Crawley Town narrowly failed to take Manchester United to an FA Cup replay.
Wes Brown's first-half header proved enough for United, who struggled to cope with Crawley's tenacity.
