Ferguson: I’ve got balance of Man Utd squad just right
13.01.11 | Dave Williams
Sir Alex Ferguson is content to sit back and watch his rivals scramble around in the transfer window knowing hisManchester United squad is well balanced.
Sir Alex Ferguson is content to sit back and watch his rivals scramble around in the transfer window knowing hisManchester United squad is well balanced.
United are currently sitting two points clear at the summit of the Premier League after an unbeaten campaign so far and the Scottish tactician is now looking to consistency to claim a record 19th title.
He told the latest edition of Inside United magazine: "I'm happy with the squad size. I just hope now that we can hit a consistent vein of form.
"We'll hopefully have AntonioValencia back in February, which will be a great boost to us and will give me more options with Nani."
Ferguson is particularly pleased that a right mix of older and younger players has been achieved.
He added: "It's been our plan for years to have that spread of ages here, so that when the older players retire we have the people with the right experience and ability to replace them.
"At the moment we have several players in that mid-to-late 20s group: Nemanja Vidic, Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea.
"Then we have that group of older players in their 30s: Ryan Giggs, Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes.
"Finally there's the younger group, which contains a lot of players aged 24 or under, including Nani, Gibson, Anderson, Obertan, Macheda, Hernandez, Evans, Smalling, Rafael and Fabio, plus players out on loan like Diouf, Welbeck, Cleverley and Drinkwater. That's a good nucleus of youngsters coming through the ranks.
"It's very important for us [that these players are growing up together]. That's why it was so disappointing to get knocked out of the Carling Cup. If they'd had another semi-final over two legs, it would have been great experience for them - the kind that they have enjoyed over the last two seasons in winning the competition."
But Ferguson acknowledges it is harder for youngsters to make their mark now than it was for the likes of Giggs and Scholes.
"The demands are greater now because the standards have risen, and the expectations too because of the club's success over the last 15 years," he said.
"So it increases each year. When I first arrived there wasn't that same level of expectation because we were still a growing club, trying to achieve that success. Now it's true that the young players find it a bit harder."
Real Madrid told €50M needed for Man Utd to consider Chicharito sale

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez remains under consideration atReal Madrid as a January signing.
Marca says Real have three names they are targeting to solve their striker problems this month:Emmanuel Adebayor(Manchester City), Miroslav Klose(Bayern Munich) and Hernandez.
Adebayor and Klose would be taken on-loan for six months, while Real know they would have to pay over the odds to sign Mexican star Chicharito.
Real have been told it would take €50 million - at least - to convince United to part with Hernandez.
Man Utd plan to buy Oxlade-Chamberlain and loan him back to Southampton
13.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United would be happy to buy Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and loan him back to Southampton this month.
The Daily Star says United bossSir Alex Ferguson and his assistant Mike Phelan made a personal check on Oxlade-Chamberlain on Tuesday night and are considering a bid.
Fergie watched the player in action for the Saints at Oldham and the youngster, who is the son of former England and Portsmouth star Mark Chamberlain, scored in a 6-0 victory.
Ferguson was looking at United’s FA Cup fourth round opponents. But the main incentive for his trip to Boundary Park was to see Oxlade-Chamberlain.
It is understood United are willing to sign the player and loan him back for the rest of the season.
Man Utd boss Ferguson wary rushing back Valencia too soon
13.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson will not rush back Antonio Valencia for their Champions League clash with Marseille.
The Ecuador winger needed surgery to repair an ankle fracture and ligament damage he suffered in a group game against Rangers in September.
Valencia could return in time for the second leg with Marseille but has been ruled out of United’s trip to the Stade Velodrome on February 23 in the first knockout round.
Ferguson said: "He’s making the progress exactly the way we thought. It’s looking like the end of February or beginning of March.
"He should be back training in five to six weeks time, but given the extent of the injury we’ll give him more time to get into the full flow of things."
Man Utd star Anderson back behind wheel of flash new motor
13.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United star Anderson has rewarded himself for his good form with a brand new motor.
The Brazilian, 22, has been spotted out and about in a brand new Mercedes SLS — worth a whopping £160,000.
But whether the Old Trafford starlet has learned from his previous experience behind the wheel remains to be seen.
Anderson had a lucky escape last August when he was hauled from the wreckage of his Audi R8 after it crashed into a wall in Portugal.
Man Utd sell Eikrem to Molde
13.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United have sold Magnus Eikrem to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Molde.
talkSPORT says Eikrem - highly rated by Sir Alex Ferguson - has moved to join Solskjaer at Molde having signed a three-year deal.
But United have insisted on a buy-back option, similar to the one inserted in Ryan Shawcross' contract when he moved to Stoke, so that if Eikrem blossoms in Norway, Ferguson will have first option on him.
Tottenham boss Redknapp: Man Utd lost Ronaldo - they must be weaker. Surely!
13.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Tottenham bossHarry Redknapp is adamant leaders Manchester Unitedare weaker this season.
United going into their clash at Spurs unbeaten in the league and clear at the top of the table.
But Redknapp told the Hornsey Journal: “If you look at United they’re not as strong as they were a couple of years ago, they can’t be.
“They’ve lost a player, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, who is just the most amazing player in the world. Along with Messi, he’s the best, it’s out of those two.
“He’s got something like 65 goals in 62 games for Real Madrid. It’s beyond belief. So when you take him out of your team you can’t be as good. He got 40-odd goals for them one season.”
However, Redknapp is not underestimating Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, and he believes that their unbeaten league record this season is a testament to their quality and resilience.
“[Dimitar] Berbatov’s in great form, he’s a fantastic player, and I’m sure [Wayne] Rooney will be back,” he said. “When they’ve got their full team out, with the likes of [Nemanja] Vidic and [Rio] Ferdinand, they’re still strong.
“I say it all the time, you need your best players and they’ve had little spells where Rio’s been out or they’ve had one or two missing – there was no Rooney for a long spell. But they’ve come through that unbeaten and now they’ve got their best players back they’re going to be even more difficult.
“It’s a big test for us but we’ve had some big tests already. We’ve been to Arsenal and won, and drawn with Chelsea at home, so it’s another big one, but they don’t come much tougher than this.”
Giggs on verge of U-turn for Wales return
13.01.11 | Dave Williams
Ryan Giggs could come out of international retirement and play for Wales now that his former Wales team-mate Gary Speed has been appointed manager.
The 37-year-old retired from international football in 2007 but the veteran midfielder has indicated he may consider a Wales return if asked.
"At the moment I am just concentrating on playing for United," he told Sky Sports News.
"But I played with Gary - he was a great player and I am sure he will do a great job for Wales.
"In the future, if he ever needed any help or ever needed anything from me, that would be no problem.
"But at the moment I just wish him all the best and I just hope he can get Wales winning."
Giggs is one of the greatest footballers in Welsh history, making his debut in 1991 and going on to win 64 caps before standing down to prolong his club career.
Man Utd, Man City target Ganso fumes at Santos
13.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United andManchester City are on red alert after Paulo Henrique Ganso attacked his club, Santos.
Ganso was promised a new contract by Santos when they pulled out the stops to draw up a deal to keep his team-mate Neymar out of Chelsea's clutches in August.
However, talks were put on hold when he picked up a knee injury and he feels let down by club bosses.
"Nothing has been resolved, there is no signature on the contract," said the frustrated 21-year-old.
"It has been five months and nothing. To not be valued by your club is complicated. Talks were closed because Santos stopped coming to me."
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a big fan of the towering attacking midfielder, while City made enquiries for Ganso last summer. Their option on the youngster expired following Robinho's departure from Santos this season.

But Kuszczak has revealed he will leave the Reds if Fergie doesn’t hand him the job.
“I know I have not got the biggest name in the world but, and I don’t want this to sound arrogant, I think I am good enough,” Kuszczak toldManchester Evening News.
“I have talked to the boss a few times and he said we will see what happens at the end of the season and I know that in the meantime if I get a chance I have to play well because that is the only way I am going to impress him. If the club decide I am not good enough for them then I will have to go somewhere else.
“If Sir Alex Ferguson decides at the end of the season I am not good enough then I will look for another club.
“Everything is open now. I am realistic about my situation. It would not frighten me to take over as Edwin’s successor. Why should it? I am not new here."
Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson Believes Number Of Managerial Sackings Are Linked To Foreign Owners
Scot feels club is benefiting from years of stability.
By Grant Wilson
Jan 12, 2011 5:25:00 AM
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that the increase in foreign owners in English football is the main reason behind the sacking of almost a quarter of managers in the country already this season.
A total of 22 managers have relinquished their posts at their respected clubs so far this season and Ferguson, who is also a key member of the League Managers Association, feels this is linked to the increase in investment from overseas.
"Unfortunately it's the climate of management nowadays and, over the last decade, it has got worse and worse," Ferguson told The Guardian.
"I don't think the game has the stable directorships it used to have, with clubs having the grandfather and father being chairmen for periods of 40-odd years.
"You have new ownerships now, people from abroad, the Middle East, the United States and Russia.
"You've got all different types of cultures coming into the game now and running football clubs, and I don't think they have the same patience of older generations."
Ferguson’s son, Darren, is one of the 22 - having been sacked by Preston North End - although a return to former employers Peterborough United is on the cards, but the United boss did admit football is not always easy to work in.
"It's not an easy industry to work in nowadays, particularly for younger managers looking to gain experience and confidence.” Ferguson continued.
"You know, time is a great thing for managers. If they are given time, they can get their philosophy across to the football club and lay the foundations, but they are just not getting that time."
Current LMA figures show that a total of 1,023 managers have lost their jobs in the time Ferguson has been at United, and the Scot believes the club is benefiting from stability.
United are chasing a record 19th top flight title and Ferguson believes the team can use their experience to bring the trophy back to Old Trafford.
"If you are near the top at New Year, either top or within two or three points of the leaders, then you are in the frame," Ferguson said.
"I always feel that we progress in the second half and I expect us to use our experience. It is not an easy league now – Wolves have beaten Chelsea, Blackpool have beaten Liverpool – but I just feel that, with our own form, we are starting to get there."
Ferguson was also asked by Sirius XM how he kept players happy when he rotated the squad, adding: “Several things come into it, but first of all the players have to understand that, at Manchester United, we have to use our squad.
"I'll always explain to a player I have left out exactly what I am trying to do and the reason for not including him in a particular game.
"In general, it appears to pay off, in terms of respect for the player and giving him his head. If he has his own opinion, great, I am happy to talk it through with him and they always know they may be playing next week and somebody else will have to sit it out.
"If we win things, then it shows the way we have gone about things is correct. If we are winning the Premier League, European Cup or FA Cup, then we know we have done the right thing."

Nemanja Vidic Warns Premier League Title Rivals That Manchester United Will Improve
Serb insists England's top flight has become more competitive.
By Stephen Darwin
Jan 11, 2011 1:29:00 PM
Manchester United center-back Nemanja Vidic has admitted that the Red Devils have, for the most part, been performing below what they are capable of but maintains belief that his side will get stronger with performances traditionally improving towards the latter end of the season.
United currently lead the way in the race for the Premier League title with two games in hand on second place Manchester City and Vidic admits that the Old Trafford camp is confident.
"We definitely have a positive feeling," he told Inside United.
"We know that up until the win over Blackburn we hadn't performed as well as we can.
"But from my experience, this sort of time is when we usually come into good form.
"We all want to win the trophy. Last season was very disappointing.
"We just need to keep pushing hard and playing well. If we do that, we have a good chance of regaining it."
The likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea are all within nine points of United at the top of the pile and Vidic is adamant that England's top flight has become more competitive this season.
"The quality has improved," he continued.
"We saw last season how competitive the league is and it's been even more so this year.
"Sides such as Tottenham and Manchester City have raised their games, whilst other teams understand they have to improve if they want to stay in the league because it is so competitive. They have done that.
"It is a physically strong league and players have raised their game in that way too."

Liverpool Manager Kenny Dalglish Fumes Over 'Joke' Penalty Decision Against Manchester United
Howard Webb got the red card wrong as well, says Scot.
By Adithya Ananth
Jan 10, 2011 5:00:00 AM
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish believes that referee Howard Webb got two major decisions wrong during Sunday's game against Manchester United.
The two sides met at Old Trafford on Sunday in the third round of the FA Cup, which also happened to be Dalglish's second coming as the Merseyside club's boss.
But his return to management began on a sour note, as Dimitar Berbatov fell in the penalty area after what appeared to be little contact with defender Daniel Agger - and the man in charge pointed to the spot.
Ryan Giggs went on to convert the penalty, which proved to be the winner as no other goals were scored during the rest of the game.
But there was further controversy in the first half, as skipper Steven Gerrard was sent off for a challenge on Michael Carrick.
And the Reds boss believes that Webb got both decisions wrong, as he told reporters: "The penalty was a joke.
"Unless they have changed the rules it is not a penalty.
"The other one, I cannot see that as a red card either. In the dressing room before the game someone said to me the game's not changed that much. I said, 'I thought it was a non-contact sport'. Maybe I was right."

Vidic: United ready to peak
Vidic believes it bodes well for United that they have managed to hit top spot in the Barclays Premier League without finding their peak form on a consistent basis this season.
There have been highlights for the Red Devils - chiefly the seven-goal mauling of Blackburn Rovers in November, a thrilling win over Liverpool and a disciplined display against Arsenal.
But most results this term have been ground out, with valuable points gained at Sunderland and Aston Villa, plus a scrambling success at West Bromwich Albion on New Year's Day compensating for late disappointments at Fulham, Everton and Birmingham City.
However, as they approach Sunday's eagerly-awaited trip to Tottenham Hotspur, United remain unbeaten, and there is a growing feeling at Old Trafford that this could be the season when Sir Alex Ferguson's side register that record 19th league title.
"We definitely have a positive feeling," Vidic said.
TOUGH CHALLENGE
The strength Ferguson has at his disposal means that United were able to book an FA Cup fourth-round trip to Southampton at the weekend despite resting Vidic and being without the injured Wayne Rooney and Edwin van der Sar.
In addition, Paul Scholes and John O'Shea have been sidelined for an extended period, while hopes of any kind of comeback for Owen Hargreaves would appear to be fading, given Ferguson can offer no timescale for the England star, who will not enjoy his 30th birthday celebrations later this month.
Not that Vidic is willing to take anything for granted.
There may still be doubt over whether the Serbian will be facing United old-boy David Beckham at White Hart Lane this weekend, but he accepts it will be a tough challenge against one of the most improved sides in what he insists is a tougher league than ever before.
"The quality has improved," he said.
"We saw last season how competitive the league is and it's been even more so this year.
"Sides such as Tottenham and Manchester City have raised their games, whilst other teams understand they have to improve if they want to stay in the league because it is so competitive. They have done that.

Kuszczak wants to be number one
Van der Sar, currently suffering from flu, is debating whether to retire from football at the end of the season.
United have continued to be linked with several goalkeepers despite signing Anders Lindegaard from Aalesund.
But Kuszczak, 28, is determined to become the number one - or move on.
BIGGEST NAME
He said: "I know I have not got the biggest name in the world, and I do not want this to sound arrogant... I think I am good enough.
"I have talked to the boss (Sir Alex Ferguson) a few times and he said we will see what happens at the end of the season.

"If I play for this club long term I will be really happy because that has always been my dream. I came to Manchester to try to be a top goalkeeper for many years like my idol Peter Schmeichel."

Beckham may delay Spurs move to skip Man Utd showdown
11.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
There's talk delays over Tottenham's deal for LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham is being done so he misses a difficult debut against former club Manchester United.
The London Evening Standard says it is believed that agreement still needs to be reached between Spurs and Galaxy over Beckham's reported wages of £80,000 a week and image rights. Spurs will want any playing period to be made worth their while because a first-team squad of 25 has to be registered with the Premier League on 31 January.
Under the current arrangement Beckham would only be available to play in four League games plus the Fulham FA Cup tie.
One source suggested that an extended loan contract until the start of the new MLS season on 15 March will be signed but the apparent delay in formalising a deal is a convenience that means Beckham will not have to face the prospect of making his Spurs debut against former club Manchester United at the Lane on Sunday.

11.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is desperate to end his scoring duck.
The 24-year-old is getting mightily fed up at not being able to break his goalscoring duck.
He came so close again in Sunday's FA Cup triumph over Liverpool with a thunderous header that bounced back off Pepe Reina's post.
That makes it three times the woodwork has failed him.
"I have hit the post three times without scoring now, plus a few other sitters as well," he said. "The thing is, I am prolific in training too, so I don't know what I am doing wrong on the pitch.
"I guess it is just not one of my strong points."

"The FA Cup is such a big trophy. It is known all round the world. There is so much hype behind it.
"I would certainly look back and think it was something I missed out on."

Owen is desperate to play a part in United's campaign, now that he is fully fit.
"Oh yeah. I don't think there's any doubt among the players. We're all confident in each other's ability and the biggest thing is the depth in the squad," Owen told manutd.com.
"In any given week there are probably five internationals who aren't even getting on the bench – I can testify to that! - so we definitely have the talent."
Man Utd striker Owen: Liverpool changed from top to bottom
10.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United strikerMichael Owen says Liverpool have completely changed from the days he was with the club.
Owen believes there isn't enough 'Liverpool-type' players now at Anfield.
He said: "Throughout all those successful years Liverpool built their foundation on passing and moving.
"But, from when I was there, everything has changed, barring two players. They even got rid of the doctors and the medical staff.
"Maybe there have not been enough Liverpool players over the last 10 years.
"If there was just one reason, then it would have been fixed. But there have been so many."
Man Utd boss Ferguson admits he could buy in January
10.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson admits he could make a signing this month.
Ferguson has already added goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard from Aalesunds, but that deal was done last month.
Ferguson admitted: “I’d like to get one player in during the transfer window if I could.
“With some deals done in January you don’t get the benefit until a year later – such as with Vidic and Evra.
“Clubs have different training methods and when you have a player coming in mid-season into your club, and their training routine might be completely different to yours, you are trying to change them.”

Man Utd striker Owen: Liverpool NOT in false position
10.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United strikerMichael Owen says he isn't surprised by Liverpool's fall.
And Owen says his old club is in no false position hovering four points from the dropzone.
"I am not particularly surprised," he told United Review. "I would say their position reflects where they are right now.
"They are in the middle of a transitional period and off the pitch they have had a change of ownership.
"They are also very reliant on a couple of star players and if they are out injured, they have tended to struggle."
Man Utd boss Ferguson: I never thought I would face Dalglish again

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits he was surprised to be facing Kenny Dalglish again yesterday.
Dalglish saw his first game back as Liverpool manager end in FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford.
"I didn't think I would see this day," admitted Ferguson.
"When you have been out of the game so long you don't expect it to resurface again.
"But obviously Liverpool see that as the way ahead and it is their club."
Giggs: Man Utd felt comfortable against Liverpool
10.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
Ryan Giggs says Manchester United were satisfied with their FA Cup win over Liverpool.
Giggs hit the only goal of the game from the spot, while he saw Steven Gerrard sent off for the visitors.
The midfielder left the ground as he launched himself into a tackle on Michael Carrick, with ref Howard Webb taking his time to calm some raised tempers before showing the red card.
Goalscorer Giggs would not be drawn on the incident, saying: "I couldn't see it myself but the players' reactions tend to tell you a lot and the players round the ball were not too happy and once the decision is made you have to get on with it.
"That early goal helped us, as did the sending-off, but we had chances to finish off the game and you are a bit nervous when you don't take them.
"Defensively we looked good and we could have scored more today."

Jonny Evans was delighted with his comeback game forManchester United's FA Cup win over Liverpool.
The defender suffered a loss of form earlier this season, but he has come back fighting.
"It's been difficult in terms of dealing with the mental side of it," he admitted to MUTV. "But I've always had confidence in my ability and great support from my family and the manager.
"I just had to step back and look at what things I needed to be doing - and that's just doing the basic things well, like defending and keeping clean sheets."
That's exactly what he did against Liverpool on Sunday alongside Rio Ferdinand, who Evans praised for his part in the shut-out of Fernando Torres and co.
"Rio's been fantastic," he added. "He's had a stop-start couple of seasons, but he's played a lot of games and he's back playing well. He's got great experience, so that was good to have alongside me."
Evans will be hoping to build on this excellent display, but he knows there's still hard work ahead.
"It's funny how things can change in football, and you can't become complacent. I just want to prepare and make sure I do well in my next game."
Liverpool boss Dalglish brands Man Utd winner a joke: Gerrard also was never a red
10.01.11 | tribalfootball.com
New Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish was furious withManchester United's first minute penalty in yesterday's FA Cup defeat.
Dimitar Berbatov won the spotkick after a clumsy challenge from Dan Agger.
"The penalty is a joke," said Dalglish. "I have seen the replay and unless they have changed the rules it is no penalty.
"The other one, I cannot see that as a red card either.
"In the dressing room before the game someone said to me the game's not changed that much.
"I said 'I thought it was a non-contact sport'. Maybe I was right."
United boss Sir Alex Fergusonoffered a differing view - and also insisted Steven Gerrard deserved his red card for a challenge on Michael Carrick.
"It was a penalty," he argued.
"Dimitar says he was definitely clipped. The replay shows he slightly touched him but the momentum is enough to bring the player down.
"There is no reason for him to go down anyway. He is not that kind of player.
"He is on the by-line, he is in the penalty box. I think it was right.
"As for the sending off, there was no doubt.
"It was two-footed and he was off the ground.
"Steven Gerrard is not that type of player but it was a reckless challenge. I don't think he left the referee with any option."
